Are You MARCHing Toward Your Dreams?

March 9th, 2011

3.9.11

The merry month of March is here! For those of you in the cold corners of the country you’re probably saying, “Thank Goodness”! For the rest of us in the land of sea and sunshine it’s harder to notice the difference sometimes.

One month seems like the next, but we shouldn’t become some complacent. If we view the start of each new month as a new beginning we can reset our alarm clocks and get on with what we said (or thought or dreamed) we wanted for the New Year.

Many of us make those irresistible New Year’s Resolutions and then break them before Valentine’s Day. Sometimes we tell ourselves that next year will be better-we’ll get more serious-more focused-more disciplined, etc.

Forget about next year. Start NOW. Press that restart button and just begin.

Is  this the year for having an ideal weight, finding that soul mate, clearing out the clutter, letting go of stuff and lightening up?

So, get MARCHing, and keep MARCHing

TODAY- Organize Your Home Office Day!

March 8th, 2011

3.8.11

It’s Tuesday already in the wonderful world of the work week! Did you know today is called “Organize Your Home Office Day”?

It seems now more than ever that folks have home offices. This has really taken off this century but was growing exponentially at the end of the last one. Many years ago it seemed everyone went “to the office”, if they had an office job and it was the exception rather than the rule to have an office in the home.

Growing up in Illinois I can’t recall any household with a home office. When bills were to be paid, my mother sat down at the kitchen table with her checkbook the family bills, her trusty steno pad, and a pen. That’s it.  She might have had a small adding machine, but I don’t recall. That was her portable “home office”.

Nowadays parents start to salivate when the oldest child starts flapping the wings. Visions of an empty room and all the possibilities dance in the grown-ups’ heads:  craft room, man cave, exercise/yoga studio are but a few. If the house does not have a home office, that often becomes the first place winner.

Not everyone has the luxury of an empty room, however. So whether your space is a big empty room or a desk alcove in the kitchen, or even a table in the kitchen like my mother, take a look at it today.

Is it serving you well?

Do you have surface space on which to work?

Are your supplies within arms’ reach of your chair?

Does the space invite you in or do you dread it?

I had a head start on my office this past weekend, seeing this special event coming on the calendar for today. I purged files. I filled recycling bins and shredders. I hung up pictures instead of having them lean against the wall, providing me with more surface space for projects.

And most of all I had fun!

What one step could you take to make your office more fun and inviting?

No time to do it today? Schedule a date with yourself and make a start!

Happy “OYHO” Day!

Enjoy!

I LOVE What She’s Done!!

February 28th, 2011

2.28.11

Finishing up February in a flourish—I have to end it with just one more LOVE Story.

I sincerely hope you’ve put LOVE back into your life this month—if not with a particular person, at least rekindling your passion for what you LOVE to do!!

One of the things I love to do is snow ski. I live for a great rainstorm here in San Diego because I know once the rains come, the snow is probably falling up north.

This year we’ve had a wonderful winterland in the mountains. In December alone Mammoth Mountain received 209 inches of new snow—most snow in the world!

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to meet a delightful “young” lady at Mammoth’s Main Lodge at lunch. Meal times can often be crowded experiences at ski lodges, so sharing a big table with others is pretty common.

She was reading a paperback and didn’t look like a skier. She was all alone at a table for six. I asked if the chairs were open and she said, “Sure”.

We got to chatting at lunch. Turns out this “young” gal is 86 years old and is indeed a skier! Here’s the best part—she took up skiing at the tender age of 66!!

No one in her family skied—even those much younger than she, but she thought it looked like fun. I don’t even think she had grown up around cold weather.

She loves the sport and works at Main Lodge as a Host. The reason she was reading a book was she had finished her shift of work for the day, had gone skiing, and relaxed in the afternoons in the lodge before joining others on the bus ride back to Bishop.

She gets up around 5:00 a.m. to take the bus from Bishop to Mammoth to work.

You might think she lives in Bishop which is about a 45 minute drive (in good weather) to Mammoth. But no, this Wonder Woman, lives in Lake Isabella, over 200 miles from the mountains and several hours of driving, depending on the conditions.

When she’s not in the mountains, or driving herself to and fro, she can be found line dancing or doing aerobics at the Kern River Valley Veterans Senior Center.

If you ever have the pleasure of skiing at Mammoth, be sure and stop in at Main Lodge and ask for Bobbie Pitcher, “Girl Extraordinaire”! Tell her she’s my hero!

Have You Been Doing What You Love This Month?

February 26th, 2011

2.26.11

The month of Love and Roses is just about over. Earlier I wrote about doing what you love this month, so I just wanted to check back with you to see how that’s going for you.

Today I watched kite surfers having the time of their life in the ocean. Watching them and their  kite boards soar over the waves on a beautiful, breezy Saturday afternoon was truly spectacular.

Last night we had a huge rainstorm. The wind was howling and it seemed like the rain was coming down sideways. It was so noisy against the bedroom windows I woke up often -thinking I must be on a boat or something.

When the new day dawned the rain was gone. Left in its place was a crisp, cool (by our standards), carefree weekend day. These kite surfers took to the water like cows to grass..

The sport of kite surfing has taken off in recent years and equipment has become safer. However, folks out there need to know what they’re dong. This is not an amateur sport to tackle on a dare.

Yellow, blues, red and white–the colors of the kites against the glistening water and the cloud-filled sky provided a rainbow of delights to those of us on shore.

It brought to mind a  plaque I have in my home office:

“As we endure storms, we shall see rainbows.”

Hoping your month has been filled with not only love and roses, but rainbows, too.

LOVE WHAT YOU DO- DO WHAT YOU LOVE

February 10th, 2011

2.11.11

We’re heading into Valentine’s Weekend. Everything’s turning red and rosy, hearts galore, and chocolates every way we turn.

So what if we don’t have a significant someone in our life right now? Not to worry, just don’t go and buy yourself a box of creamy chocolates to let yourself know how much you are loved by you!

Instead, focus on what you really enjoy doing. If it’s driving, get in the car and spend some part of the weekend on a drive. Of course, for my friends not living in Southern California this can be a not great experience this time of year. So for you folks, maybe postpone that one, until after the winter thaw.

How about you love to cook? Or bake? Or enjoy some kind of craft? Or time with your children or grandchildren? Or some other hobby you have been neglecting because you’ve been “too busy”?

Maybe you love time with friends or a job you really enjoy or time puttering around your house.

With Valentine’s Day in the air and all over the air waves, get quiet with yourself and think about what YOU truly love—

Then, HOP to it, and just Do It!
