Finishing up February in a flourish—I have to end it with just one more LOVE Story.
I sincerely hope you’ve put LOVE back into your life this month—if not with a particular person, at least rekindling your passion for what you LOVE to do!!
One of the things I love to do is snow ski. I live for a great rainstorm here in San Diego because I know once the rains come, the snow is probably falling up north.
This year we’ve had a wonderful winterland in the mountains. In December alone Mammoth Mountain received 209 inches of new snow—most snow in the world!
Earlier this month I had the opportunity to meet a delightful “young” lady at Mammoth’s Main Lodge at lunch. Meal times can often be crowded experiences at ski lodges, so sharing a big table with others is pretty common.
She was reading a paperback and didn’t look like a skier. She was all alone at a table for six. I asked if the chairs were open and she said, “Sure”.
We got to chatting at lunch. Turns out this “young” gal is 86 years old and is indeed a skier! Here’s the best part—she took up skiing at the tender age of 66!!
No one in her family skied—even those much younger than she, but she thought it looked like fun. I don’t even think she had grown up around cold weather.
She loves the sport and works at Main Lodge as a Host. The reason she was reading a book was she had finished her shift of work for the day, had gone skiing, and relaxed in the afternoons in the lodge before joining others on the bus ride back to Bishop.
She gets up around 5:00 a.m. to take the bus from Bishop to Mammoth to work.
You might think she lives in Bishop which is about a 45 minute drive (in good weather) to Mammoth. But no, this Wonder Woman, lives in Lake Isabella, over 200 miles from the mountains and several hours of driving, depending on the conditions.
When she’s not in the mountains, or driving herself to and fro, she can be found line dancing or doing aerobics at the Kern River Valley Veterans Senior Center.
If you ever have the pleasure of skiing at Mammoth, be sure and stop in at Main Lodge and ask for Bobbie Pitcher, “Girl Extraordinaire”! Tell her she’s my hero!
