A Little Place Can Be Special

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Do you ever get stuck trying to make your house into a home? I think that happens to all of us at some time, regardless of how long we have lived in a place.

I’ve lived in my house ten years now – wow, did that go by quickly! I’ve had a little porch off the living room. The operative word here is “little”. Certainly, no room for line dancing on this slice of cement, but enough space for one or two people to walk out and smell the great ocean air and peek at the blue Pacific.

During this darn-fast decade I have never sat on this porch. I guess I was too busy going to and fro or here and there to give it much thought. The only times I would go out there would be to hang a decorative flag about an upcoming holiday or event or to bring in that same flag when the wind started to roar like a tiger.

Earlier this month I found myself out on that porch fiddling with a flag, when I thought, “Boy, it’s kind of sweet out here-why don’t I ever come here?” I looked around and saw that I had a small bistro table still sitting there from not sure when. The only activity the table had had was birds visiting the mosaic top of broken china and chiseling pieces out for one of their nests.

I quickly found two patio chairs and a small BBQ grill and brought them onto the porch. I watered the window boxes and the red geraniums stood tall as toy soldiers with this attention. That Saturday afternoon I took a much-needed break of tea on that porch and relished in its simplicity. Not a big place-but just big enough to read, relax, and re-create my afternoon.

Do you have a little spot in your house that is calling to you? Look around. Maybe it’s been there all along but you haven’t had a chance to stop and notice. See if you can find it and let me know what kind of sanctuary from the day you can create.
